Lime Application
Apply lime for maximum benefits
Lime applications are often overlooked in many fertilizer programs. As a result of organic matter decomposition and the addition of nitrogen fertilizer, soils become acidic (or develop a low pH). Hydrogen ions are produced by these processes which displaces calcium (or lime) in the soil. As soil becomes more acidic the availability of many nutrients becomes reduced. Soil acidity is expressed as the soil pH. The optimum level for maintaining turfgrass is a pH 6.8. Lime applications raise soil pH.
That explains the technical part of the need for lime, and here are some tangible results that you can expect:
-
-
- Improved response from fertilizer applications
- Improved water penetration
- Improved turfgrass color and density
- Promotes root development
- Promotes growth of favorable soil bacteria
