How do I control weeds in my lawn? Olympia & DuPont Lawn Care Experts
Most broadleaf weeds in lawns are controlled with a selective herbicide. Selective herbicide kills weeds by causing the cells in the plant tissue to divide and grow without stopping. With the proper rate and timing, selective herbicide only effects dicotyledons, also known as dicots, seeds that have 2 embryonic leaves like broadleaf weeds. It has no effect on monocots, plants that have 1 seed leaf like turfgrass.
The most common weeds that we deal with in lawns are dandelion and clover. In the late Spring and Summer weeds and grass are growing vigorously. This is the best time for broadleaf weed control. Herbicide absorption and translocation is excellent, and the grass can fill in the areas remaining after the weeds have been controlled.
We include weed control in our Spring and Summer fertilizer application. Our product is rain-fast in 3-4 hours and weed death in 7-14 days. Where the weed population is large a second application may be needed at a 2-week interval. Our weed control has a low toxicity for humans and pets and is rapidly broken down by microbes in the soil into harmless compounds.
The best defense against weeds in your lawn is a dense stand of turf. Consider Aeration, De-Thatching, Lime Application and Over-seeding if you have thin or troubled areas in your lawn.
